The rare dark garnet red grape variety Asuretuli Shala was discovered wild in the forests around Asureti by German settlers in the early 19th century. It only comes from this small village in southern Georgia. Levan Bandzeladze, a 37-year-old auditor, has been making wine as a hobby in nearby Bolnisi since he was 18 and is now turning his passion into a profession.
